August 3, 2013 – Lanice Trotter assembles a memorial to her son, Montel Starnes, at the football field behind McFarland Community Center where Starnes coached the little league football team, the East Memphis Vikings. Starnes passed away in June from kidney and renal failure. He was Trotter’s only child. Trotter decorates the tree with Steelers and Grizzles memorabilia, Starnes’ favorite sports teams, as well as photos of Starnes with his family, friends and kids he coached. Trotter wanted this memorial to be a place where members of Starnes’ team could come and leave memorials to her son at a place where he was beloved for his generosity and dedication to the community.
